Creating your Destiny and Fate
One thing that has always bothered me is the concept of Destiny and Fate.
There is a school of thought that says we create our own destiny.
And then there is another school of thought that says our destiny is written i.e. also referred to as fate.
Being an entrepreneurial person, I always believed in the first notion that we create our own destiny 100%.
Listen to most successful entrepreneurs out there and they’ll tell you that they worked hard for what they have achieved.
It didn’t just happen to them, they had to go out and get it. Success comes to those who work for it.
I totally believe the above statement that success comes to those who work for it. Surely, you can’t just sit around and expect to be successful unless you are really really lucky. Even the new age bitcoin traders or teslanaires (those who become millionaires for holding Tesla shares) put in that effort to research companies and stocks and that’s how they got rich.
However, there are things in my life that have been happening, that no matter how hard I work, no matter how much effort I put in, it just doesn’t work.
This is when I begin to question, can we really create our own destiny every single time or is it sometimes written for us?
Does the universe or whatever is out there have a way of directing our life in the way it’s meant to be?
Maybe we can achieve the most optimal outcome out of a variety of outcomes through our hard work, but in the end what’s meant to happen will happen albeit with the best results possible.
The more I thought about it, the more I realised that, actually, it comes down to one thing – what we can control and what we can’t control.
What we CAN control
There are things in life that are totally in our control e.g.
- Whether we decide to start that business or not
- Whether we decide to go out and meet that person
- Whether we decide to pursue that hobby
etc
All these things have one thing in common; they are in our control and we make the decision to do them or not.
Starting that business means that you have a greater shot at success. Not starting that business means that you’ll have a zero shot at success.
You may/may not be successful but you gave it a chance.
Similarly, going out and meeting that person means you have a better shot at making a new friend or finding someone to date. Not going out means you’ll have a zero chance at making a new friend/finding love.
And so on and so forth.
Therefore, in scenarios in which we are in full control of the initial step – we must give it our all and go all the way. There is no excuse.
What we CAN’T control
Conversely, there are things in life that we can’t control.
- A business failing because of the COVID pandemic
- A person not liking you back the way you like them
- Losing your job because of a recession
etc
The one thing common to all of the above is that they are external events. They are outside of our control.
No matter how hard we work, no matter how much you pray or how hard you try, you have no control over the above external events.
In such instances, I’ve come to realise, that maybe, just maybe, one’s destiny is written.
What’s the way forward?
So then, how do we move forward? Is there a way out to achieve the best possible outcome with all the limitations?
I have come to the following conclusion:
For things that you can control, give it 100%. Do not stop trying until you win or you realise that it’s not going to work after having tried everything. Try new ways of doing things and only give up when you are 100% sure that you have tried everything. Even then, give it one more shot. Expect more, do more. Reach for the stars if you must.
For things that you can’t control, give it your best shot. BUT acknowledge that it may not work out. Do not think negative – THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT – THOUGHTS MAKE THINGS – so do not think negative, but the key is to not have any expectations. Infact, just don’t think about it. Accept that things will work out exactly the way they are meant to be. If you have tried your best, then there’s nothing more you could do.
Creating your Destiny and Fate
I have accepted that both of these notions of creating your own destiny and destiny being written (fate) are true.
In every scenario, these two have a part to play and the best way for us to get through life is to try our best and trust that it will work out the way it’s meant to work out in the end.
I hope you enjoyed reading about my thoughts on destiny and fate and hope that you leave your thoughts and comments on this.
