Masala chai is thought to have originated in a Royal court in India as an ayurvedic drink without caffeine. During long days at court, the King would sip the tea to stay alert. Over time, the British introduced tea leaves to the Indian subcontinent. However, as these were expensive, tea vendors would use left over tea leaves, sugar, milk and spices to brew a tea for the masses giving rise to the Masala Chai. Masala chai is now enjoyed throughout India and makes for a wonderful tea break.
